Greys for Greys was set up as a small charity in 2018. Its Trustees are Helen Baldwin, Denise Dubarbier and Janie Griffiths. We are not yet big enough to have to register with the Charities Commission.
Denise's storyFor more than 20 years I have been involved with greyhounds, both as pets at home and in kennels, whilst waiting for a home. I am still as enamoured with these beautiful hounds as I was the first time I brought one home and I still feel the desire to support the charities that care for them and to promote greyhounds as pets. But after so many years of being ‘tied’ to one charity – mainly because there weren’t enough hours in the day to look beyond that charity and its immediate needs – for me it is time for a change. |
It’s been like a breath of air these past few months, being able to take time to see what other greyhound/sighthound charities are up to. To share their experiences, their ups and downs, and all purely as an observer. But an observer who can truly appreciate and relate to what is happening and the everyday struggle each charity faces to keep the dogs in their care safe and well and to give them a future.
This is why I’m 100% behind Greys for Greys. It works with the existing charities. It’s about the dogs and it ensures that any money raised goes to the dogs to pay for their medication, health-care, dietary requirements and any other items or support that enhance their well-being and quality of life. It is aimed at the older dogs. The dogs who have not found a home whilst in their prime and have watched the years slip by or have gone on to develop a medical condition which requires veterinary care. Or the dogs that have been in a home and because of a change in circumstances have found themselves back in kennels, no longer young. I’ve always had a soft spot for the oldies and over the years I’ve brought a fair number home to enjoy their twilight years as a family pet. I’d recommend it to everyone as they do make the most wonderful companions and are guaranteed to make you smile every day. Greys for Greys is also about giving support to older people with greyhounds as pets. This support isn’t necessarily financial, support can come in many forms and can make the difference between a dog staying in it’s home or being returned to the kennels. The means of support and how it is delivered is led by the charity responsible for homing the greyhound and if Greys for Greys can offer assistance, it will. For many older people the greyhound is their companion, their reason for getting up each morning, their reason for going out each day and socialising. Keep that greyhound in it’s home and everyone’s a winner. Please support Greys for Greys if you are able. Visit our fb page, post pictures of your golden oldies, share their stories, tell us about your experiences with an older greyhound. Share our events, better still, come along and support them. Share your ideas – anyone who knows me understands that I’m up for trying most things at least once and failure doesn’t faze me. It’s all about the dogs, isn’t it? Denise |
